this is my best friend and boyfriend, bfbff.
sometimes I think he is proud, like an eagle.
but sometimes I think he just likes dick.
I’m throwing out my old scenic painting assignments, they are all crumpled from improper storage and too huge to keep.
This was a cool exercise where we painted a scene that could transition from light to dark depending on if it was lit from the back or front. If you can’t tell, the second image is of the same canvas just in front of my window. (You paint black on the back of the canvas in the areas you don’t want to be illuminated, and you do thin dye washes for the areas you do.)
Mother: The Finale
Mother is having it’s final show on September 27th, 2008. For the uninitiated, Mother is the longest running New York improv team and one of the best improv teams ever, period. With Mother moving on, that means the “Big 4” house teams — The Swarm, Respecto Montalban, and Monkeydick are the other 3 — will have retired from the UCB stage.

One of the best and most memorable shows I’ve ever seen was when all the members of Mother — except for Doug Moe, I think — came back to do “House Team Harold Night” during DCM Week 3 years ago. When they were announced and stepped on-stage, they received a loud and sustained ovation from the audience. Everyone was pumped to see them do a Harold again. After a solid 2 or 3 minutes of applause, they proceeded to do the tightest Harold I’d ever seen. The entire thing was 15 minutes long. (No joke!) And it was all hilarious and cool and awesome.
Anyway, I’ll definitely be there on that Saturday night. I will laugh and maybe I’ll be sad when it ends.

Chelsea Clarke, Violet
Picture taken when close to completion, but this isn’t a totally acurate lighting situation.
This is a detail, see above posts for more. Tumblr, why can’t I post pictures directly from my computer in a text post? Or maybe I can.
So, this winter I was really psyched to paint a picture of my friend Violet. I did it for an assignment in school, to adapt your favorite painting. Well, one of my favorite is Klimt’s, “portrait of mada primavisi” I posted early in this tumblr.
I’m sad that I couldn’t make this look more like Violet. I should have done at least a portion of it from life, but I was under huge time constraints. Also, when I painted it, last minute and in very long and late nights, I did so only under lamp light. So, I thought things were considerably warmer than they were. I should have known better, and have since set up more of a proper studio lighting situation.
Anyway. I like it in a lot of ways, but to those of you that know Violet, think of it more as a painting than a portrait.
